Bastion – Squirt

This was meant to be super easy and cute. It is cute. The pattern itself pretty simple, it just gets a bit tricky when you’re switching between front loops and back loops and you’ve got the stuffed head weighing everything down.

Materials

Squirt 1Any worsted weight yarn will do. This is just what I used. You can also use coloured felt for the eyes and things on top of its head if you’d like to make your life easier.

  • Loops & Threads Impeccable Yarn
    • Colour 01110 – Navy (Dark blue)
    • Colour 01134 – Royal (Blue)
    • Optional – Colour 01425 – Soft Rose
  • 3.75mm crochet hook
  • White felt
  • Acrylic or fabric paint
  • Fabric glue
  • Polyfil
  • Invisible thread or fishing line

Gauge

Gauge doesn’t really matter, but the pattern uses double crochet stitches, so make sure you’re working with a small enough hook so the stuffing doesn’t show through.

Skills Required

  • Chain (ch)
  • Crochet in spirals
  • Single crochet (sc)
  • Double crochet (dc)
  • Increase (2 in 1)
  • Decrease (2 tog)
  • Magic ring
  • Front loop crochet (fl)
  • Back loop crochet (bl)
  • Colour change

Squirt 1Begin stuffing as you start to make the curve, and continue stuffing every few rounds thereafter.

Rounds 15-17: fl sc 5, bl dc 10, fl sc 5

Rounds 19-21: fl sc 4, bl dc 8, fl sc 4

Round 22: fl sc 2 tog, fl sc 2, [bl dc 2 tog, bl dc 2] x2, fl sc 2 tog, fl sc 2 (12)

Rounds 23-25: fl sc 3, bl dc 6, fl sc 3

Round 26: fl sc 2 tog, fl sc 1, [bl dc 2 tog, bl dc 1] x2, fl sc 2 tog, fl sc 1 (8)

This is where it begins to get really tricky and a pattern is kind of useless. Do your best to make a few more double crochets to add a bit more length to the tail. It’s going to be fairly easy to make the last little bit continue to curl, so don’t worry about the front loop and back loop stitches. If you can double crochet a few stitches together, even better. Jam a bit more polyfil in and call it a day.

Finish by pulling the yarn tail into the body to hide it.

To make the eyes and head dots, draw templates on a piece of paper, cut them out, and check to make sure they’re about the right size for it. Trace them onto the felt and paint if you’re painting, or just cut them if you’re using coloured felt. I glue them in place with fabric glue. A glue gun or sewing are also viable options.

I didn’t feel like reinventing the wheel, but there are plenty of heart patterns available for free online. If you don’t want your squirt to attack you, make a heart for it using pink.

I used invisible thread to hang the finished squirt. I hate invisible thread.
